I have just obtained a twin leading front brake plate from our hosts and am trying to install it on my 1991 350 Indian Bullet. When I start to tighten the spindle nut the brake locks on. I have compared the old and new plates and find that the distance between the plate and the edge of the shoes is more on the new plate. Placing a straight edge across the edge of the shoes (the edge which is nearest the speedo drive when installed) and measuring to the spindle hole, the new plate is 0.5CM more. This is causing the shoes to slide into the drum past the turned inside edge to a region of smaller diameter. Hence the binding.
Has anyone else had this? I thought of chamfering the edge of the shoes but am not sure if this would be a good idea - brakes are important!

Surely must be the wrong plate you have there.I would contact the hosts on this before attempting any modifications.

Or some previous owner may have laced a different (Redditch) hub into the rim. Is the rim still OEM? Is the complete front wheel OEM.
If that’s not it might give some feasiblity to this theory.

Hi guys------I'm with Jamesy on this one.........It's that old adage in Engineering viz}----"Measure once---measure twice---measure three times THEN cut your metal"......For all their good points ( and they DO have many !!) they are still a registered business and would be well within their rights to refuse a returned, worked-on item because you didn't get your facts correct to start with.........Harsh I know but having run my own Engineering Contract company in the past I would do the same in those conditions..........

OK, that's the lecture over now please follow ric's advice and do a really comprehensive check on just what wheel you do have.....and as always I ask}----Please post a photo or two to help us help you, OK ??........Try this}---- https://imgbb.com/

The twin leading shoe brake plate fitted onto my 1990 Indian 350 Bullet without the problems you describe. It was a little more tricky to set up (than the single leading shoe) , but some good instructions made it possible.
