I have just obtained a twin leading front brake plate from our hosts and am trying to install it on my 1991 350 Indian Bullet. When I start to tighten the spindle nut the brake locks on. I have compared the old and new plates and find that the distance between the plate and the edge of the shoes is more on the new plate. Placing a straight edge across the edge of the shoes (the edge which is nearest the speedo drive when installed) and measuring to the spindle hole, the new plate is 0.5CM more. This is causing the shoes to slide into the drum past the turned inside edge to a region of smaller diameter. Hence the binding.
Has anyone else had this? I thought of chamfering the edge of the shoes but am not sure if this would be a good idea - brakes are important!
