One for Paul really.

Hi Mate

as you know I had no end of bother getting ASBO 26 to run properly.

So in the end I decided to put the Valve timing back to standard and hey presto its running.. Ive dropped the needle jet down to a 107 with needle in mid position.. Not saying its correct yet but its in the zone and rideable enough to allow carb tweaks and dynamic timing to be carried out..

The engine runs on Ok now instead of cutting out and the throttle is responsive..

Ill report back once Ive sorted the settings out and let you know what they are.
I will try retarding the inlet cam again once the initial set up is sorted.

My bet was on timing. Actually I meant ignition timing but hey, it was timing!

Sorry, forgot to say, congratulations on getting it running!

Hi Mark

Well I set the valve timing with the inlet cam retarded by 1 notch (18 degrees) as per Paul's suggestion and I know this has proved to be a good tweak on some bikes. But in hindsight I think I should have gone for standard settings to start with, get it all running correctly and then tried the retardation of the cam..

So that's what I'm going to do now.. Get the bike running correctly, ign timing and carb settings etc and then try the cam trick.. if it makes the bike run better then all well and good, if not it's back to aligned dots!

Hi Tom, that is very good news, if a bit puzzling. Your engine is running and you have a starting point, that is the main thing. Please don't take this the wrong way, but I would expect an advanced inlet cam timing to be more likely to cause trouble like you were having - I assume you rotated the inlet cam anticlockwise by one tooth to retard it? However, if the engine turns out happy and you do too, that's what matters! Regards, Paul.

Hi Paul...

I definitely had the inlet cam dot one notch anti clockwise to (i.e.above when looking at the dots) the exhaust cam dot at TDC.... I even took a photo of it to prove it...

Hi Tom, can't argue with that, that is how a retarded inlet cam should look. Regards, Paul.

Lol... Yes that's the photo I took as I was building the engine up... Took a photo every time I fitted a part.. I was convinced I may have gone the wrong way with it as I couldn't sort the running out.. Thought I was going doolally but no It was right...

Got out on the road for the first time and notched up 25 miles.... Going for a larger pilot jet as still popping back through carb on tick over... Wound the mixture screw all the way in so way too lean.. Have ordered a No19 pilot from Mr H.. Bike is OK on half throttle but won't pull over 50MPH as too lean..Will try the 108 coupled with a 240 Main... Will Dynamically time ign tomorrow.....
