Hi

This concerns 250 Crusaders.

For a while I’ve been searching for a serviceable HG11 21/17 slider gear for a 4 speed gearbox without much success. However recently I have managed to acquire one from a fellow member of the REOC.

But on inspection there is a problem with the dogs on the side that mates with the dogs of the mainshaft low gear. Those dogs display significant wear and rounding of the corners. The dogs on the opposite side of the slider gear appear in good condition and have minimal wear.

In view of the difficulty in obtaining serviceable HG11’s I am having to contemplate repairing the dogs by getting them re-cut them and then possibly re-case hardening the whole gear. But I think quite a bit of material may have to removed in order to fix all of the damage on the dogs. I’m not sure if these gears are fully case hardened or not.

Has anybody else done this successfully, and can you point me at suitable engineering companies that would undertake such work?

Regards OB

Have you tried our hosts for sourcing the parts you need?
If that fails just do a google because they are available.

Mr H cannot supply. I would buy from our hosts if they had them.

I cannot find a single one for sale on the internet.

These gears are not readily avaialable.

The dogs can be rebuilt with Stelite, or similar. Find your local gear maker, but dont expect it to be a cheap repair.

The HG11/21/17 for a 250 is not shown on the link you posted.

I had already tried BBB. They tell me they have had none in stock for a long while.

As these things seem to be as rare as hens teeth (pun intended) can we return to the question in my original post about repair?

As Tim says they do really need to be built up, just grinding back will allow too much slop, there are specialist company's who will carry out a repair.

Papasmurf – thanks for the link but it is for a re-listed item and I contacted the guy about them previously. He claims they are for a 250 but look like a mongrel set to me. In reply to a specific question he did not confirm there was a slider gear included (the picture is inconclusive) or what the tooth count was. I am sceptical.

Tim/Revband – I loosely reassembled the gears and measured the gap at the side of the dogs when they are engaged with their opposite number. On the damaged side (where the slider dogs meshes with the mainshaft 26 tooth low gear) this gap is about 5-6mm. The low gear is newish and undamaged. But on the side of the slider that meshes with the mainshaft 15 tooth high gear the gap is very similar at about 5mm. Both sets of dogs on the high gear side are in very good condition. I was surprised at the size of this gap, hence my question about simply cutting out the damage from the slider dogs by about 1mm or so. I thought that as the gap in the engagement is large anyway, an additional 1mm would not make much difference to the reliability of the engagement. But I guess I’m being naïve?

Also thanks for the link to the engineering shop – that’s the sort of place I’m looking for.

I plan on visiting a local motorcycle race shop on Monday. They may be able to help point me in the right direction.
