i have a indian 350 classic enfield year 2000 and i am looking to fit a 3o psi oil pressure relief valve to the side of my Samarat Rocket assembley as i have high capacity oil pumps . the reason for this is i have 85 psi of oil pressure when starting from cold which has caused a oil pump spindle failure causing big end damage which has been repaired my myself . the pressure relief valve i am looking to fit is air type with a ring pull on the top so venting the excess oil onto the top of cylinder head , your thoughts.

The bike already has a relief valve on the crankshaft found when stripped down the crankcase when renewning big end.

i know our hosts sell one but i wish to keep the look of my bike the same e.g same tappet cover .

please give me your thoughts

My thoughts are why was a high pressure pump fitted?
My suggestion is to re-fit the standard pumps, if you still have them. If not then get them from our host. Keeps the "look" and solves the over oiling problem.

I suggest you take Bryan`s advice. You have created a problem for yourself where none existed before. The standard pump has worked well for over fifty years. I never found any difference in fitting Samarat rockers, they made the same noise, more at times, so I refitted the orininals.

" the pressure relief valve i am looking to fit is air type with a ring pull on the top so venting the excess oil onto the top of cylinder head". Sorry to say if I really gave you my thoughts on this you would be very offended, vent the excess oil onto the cylinder head? 30 psi valve, 85 psi pressure, the tank would soon empty and the back end would slide around on the oil slick, you can't be serious. take Bryan's advice for goodness sake.

Doesn't Revband paint a lovely picture?

Anything venting lots of oil will have to return it to the system, this also applies to engine breathers struggling to cope with lots of blow-by from unhappy piston rings, but that's another story.

If you are not grabbed our hosts' rocker feed pressure release valve kit, which does at least put the oil back into rather than onto the engine (the lubrication system supposedly works by internal circulation, not anointing), I suppose you could find the bits to build up a late Redditch 350 Bottom end with the proper PRV and swap your Indian engine's top end and other parts across. I think there is even a way of fitting the metric bearing crankshaft into the imperial bearing crankcases, but you'd have to ask Bullet Whisperer or someone of his expertise about this, lots of arcane fun with bearing conversions, I gather.

That's for the replies with some forthWright views on the subject . Fitting of a PRV under the rocker covers is the same method our hosts use to return the excess oil back into the lubrication via timing cover and eventually the sump. The failure of the oil Spindle may not have come directly from excess load . I have run both my bikes with our hosts high capacity pumps and a oil pressure gauges for a number of years with no issues and thought it would be an idea to fit a prv whilst a rebuild is taking place as the crankshaft on that bike already has prv.

Hi Nig ... I have been running my 2003 Bullet 500 with HC pumps from our host for the past 30.000 Km without any problems. Both my old stock and the new Samrat rockerbox oilways has been expanded to 3,5 mm and I use 15W-40 mineral oil. To my knowledge no PRV is present anywhere in the oil line of the bike. I don't thrash the bike, but I'm not very gentle on the throttle either. And things just work well. No need of over engineering. Go for simple solutions and enjoy riding the bike... regards Jacob

There's no problem IN PRINCIPLE with a PRV anywhere between the scavenge pump and the rockers, Revband's point that was any oil escaping through the valve can't just be dumped outside the engine. So long as whatever PRV you eventually use can be made to vent internally all should be well. A.

Thank goodness we got that sorted, I couldn't believe my eyes re venting the oil on top of the head?. But if you have excessive oil pressure?, Bryan's advice is still good, high pressure pumps are just not needed on these engines, also they self regulate to a degree by lifting off their seats as the pressure increases but this also causes seat and pump wear.
