There is a difference between the G and J/J2 gearboxes, but only in the casing. The G has a wider mounting top and bottom than the J so a J gearbox will not bolt in directly. However a G gearbox can be fitted to the J if the mounts are trimmed back on one side and then spaced across on the other. This is to correct the difference in the engine/gearbox centre line measurements owing to the wider 500 cases. Regards.

So what do you mean about that stuff from Roy Bacon's book? I'm confused! REgards, Mark

Mark, you suggested to me that my gearbox with the code HAV 793 was probably for a 500 twin, according to Roy Bacon the gearbox on the 500 twin was bolted to the rear of the crankcase as per the G2 Bullet. The gearbox on the G is totally separate being mounted in between the engine plates, which means that it cannot be a 500 twin gearbox

That's what l thought too. Your quote didn't explain which way you thought it was wrong! That means the list l have is at least partly wrong so that sort of helps! REgards, Mark

Just want to send a big thank you to all you guys that have helped with my model G gearbox problems, although the problem is not solved at least I now know that I have the wrong box. Yes I believe it to be a model J box, thanks Tim. The one Hitchcock's have for sale is way outside my budget. The build to date has cost in excess of £3,000 !!! Mac

Hello Claude,
I'm sorry about the delay in replying to you, I have been away from home helping my daughter move into another house, I expect to be finished there on Saturday. Yes I did get your photograph and I will send you some of my gearbox with some measurements as soon as possible.
I have tried to contact you by mobile phone but my phone does not seem to recognise your number?
Whatsapp would be good if it works for us, failing that it will have to be e-mail.
Kind regards,Mac
