Thanks to all. I got the lamp out of the holder, it was really tight, ended up pulling the lamp holder out of the tube with a pair of pliers. It was a lot easier once the instrument cluster and cable/plug was all removed from the headlamp shell. So, a drop of Vaseline applied to make the next time a lot easier...
The lamp is good and there is 12v on the supply lead - so it looks like the fuel sender unit. I'm not sure what it is meant to have on the end of the two wires that are inside the tank - but this one just has two wires soldered together and a jelly like covering that comes off with a single wipe.
Re the fuses - yes I've replaced one of the 20a with a glass car type with two 'spade' legs, the standard fuse holders aren't great.
