Thanks to all. I got the lamp out of the holder, it was really tight, ended up pulling the lamp holder out of the tube with a pair of pliers. It was a lot easier once the instrument cluster and cable/plug was all removed from the headlamp shell. So, a drop of Vaseline applied to make the next time a lot easier...
The lamp is good and there is 12v on the supply lead - so it looks like the fuel sender unit. I'm not sure what it is meant to have on the end of the two wires that are inside the tank - but this one just has two wires soldered together and a jelly like covering that comes off with a single wipe.
Re the fuses - yes I've replaced one of the 20a with a glass car type with two 'spade' legs, the standard fuse holders aren't great.

It is almost certainly the sensor. Bikes from 2013/14 are famous for dissolving the float (mine's a 2014 model and did just that).

It's a dead easy job to change it, and the new ones from Hitchcocks don't dissolve.

That gel you can wipe away is the ethanol which means the sender unit has become porous and is leaking..

May be a good idea to disconnect the two wires at the socket and not send 12 volts through the unit until replaced..

I've removed the sender unit and all the other crap in the bottom of the tank, including the float and slider mechanism. Obviously had become disconnected and where lying loose in the tank bottom.
New low fuel unit one on order.
Quick question - I assume there is a fuel filter in the system, is it in the fuel pump/tank unit ? Is it accessible for cleaning. If not I think I'll install an in-line disposable type in the fuel supply tube.

I assume you tested the bulb. Finding 12V supply also means the fuse has not blown. Yes there is a filter in the pump which is mounted in the tank. If you look in the "Parts Book Online" you should find a diagram. Quite often it is the connections that are poor. Did you try reconnecting the sender unit?

The fuel pump has a filter integral with it but I can see no way of dismantling it. The pump is a mere £417, there must be some way of cleaning its filter (carb and injector squirt stuff).

fyi - my sender starts to flash the lamp when the tank wants 10 litres to fill it, about a gallon left in the tank. From old habit I always shake the tank side to side to gauge how much is in there, originally to remix 2T in the morning but this also redistributes sludge away from the tap and attendant filter.
