re the oval.. it has a key hole at the front, the key fits it but nothing budges! whats under there? my mate had to go to the other side of his bike and drive it off with a piece of wood.. this then launched off and scratched the paint!

Oh and the PCv adjusts the ignition timing as well as the fuel. This looks like the only way it can be adjusted.

Ah ha! The oval is not hinged. Turn key and pull the oval off, there will be an argument. There are two rubber grommets that want a little silicone oil squirted in their direction. All will become clear after you have broken some fingernails.

I like your cream and red. Don't think my dealer had that one; chrome/red, black bullet, olive drab military, desert storm, blue/white, black/white, CGT. I chose the model but wife chose the colour of mine, silver and black.

Service interval - do read pp.60-61 of the book of words.

First service ~500km is essential and one for the dealership. Word from the mechanic was the chain is a good one but does like a regular squirt of oil and check tension (do align, ignore notch count), and keep an eye on bolts loosening, he re-tightened everything with Loctite. RE use kilometers..

Minor service check and adjust at 3000km intervals, major service with oil change at 6000km (annual) intervals, change various rubbers at 12000km intervals, head decoke is 30,000km (but with our clean fuel that's probably not needed).

The sight glass on the crankcase varies in level according to the weather, if there is oil showing there is enough in there. It holds a lot. Too much is worse than not enough. Colour of oil can indicate it it is used up. If the oil feels thin and watery then its long molecules have been chopped up (comminuted) by the mechanicals. Mayonnaise emulsion means water has got in. Drain, change oil and filters. First service oil was inspected for debris, none present and all good. No leaks but a drop from bottom drain which needed a spanner. Do not gorilla 6mm bolts, they snap, "as tight as is tight and no tighter". Little bolts are what? 4Nm torque in alloy, that's barely nipped up and a squeeze.

Indian home market seem to get free RE services but we pay. We do have a long tradition of home servicing our bikes. I get told off for using the dining table.

my dealer says bring it back between 300 and 500 miles for the first free service.. this includes an oil and filter change, bolts retorqued etc. He said if I bring it on a Saturday morning, he'll lend me a scooter to go into Grantham for a coffee and shop and get it done whilst I'm away.

came to work on it again today.. seems a good way to run her in with the 20 mile round trip. Must say headlight is as good as anything I've owned.

Lucky you. I had to pay but I did get free coffee whilst I tried to dry out, while U wait took about an hour. Then I got completely soaked through to the skin in the thunderstorm following me every inch of the 60miles back home. That's with waterproofs on :(

Stock headlamp is good but the Neolite and Phillips is better :) :) :)

You mentioned the bar end mirror now back in its box. The chromium plated one I got from H (200034) doesn't wibble about like the stock martian antennae do. It does say bar end weights need to be removed but they don't.

I did the 300 mile service on my C5 myself; I changed the oil and filter again at 750 miles. I've always worked on my own bikes and I wanted to see what was on the magnetic drain plugs and whether it had diminished at the second oil change. Answer: not much and yes it had. There was just the expected grey sludge, no metallic bits. Personally I wouldn't leave the second oil change as long as the handbook stipulates, at least not on the C5. Each to his own.

1st service is really one for the dealer due to the warranty, they should replace any missing bolts foc :) The mechanic sieved the oil for debris and we both examined it, I didn't ask him to do that. The oil and filters looked like new, no debris, no grey sludge. It was a proper service, everything was attended to, not just oil and cursory inspection, cams adjusted, chain tensioned, headlamp aim etc. I'm a physicist-engineer about PhD level so yes I can just about manage to do a service myself - but the first 500km one is dealership for warranty purposes. The replenished oil should last 6000km or a year, I'm keeping an eye on it by visual inspection and feel, no losses and it's still like new at 1000 miles now. It will probably go back to the dealer for the 6000km/annual service because I miss stuff, I'd do it myself if I didn't trust their workshop. The way I run the bike means it's constantly serviced. RE use km for service interval and I have a mental block at converting to miles in my head ;)
