I think a cheap multimeter or even a bulb holder with two wires soldered on is the quickest way to track down the fault..
You really need to know if there is power to the coil when ignition turned on. If not then backtrack to ignition switch and fuse till you find where the power stops..
If you have power both sides of the coil then the fault lies in the points area or the wire connecting the two components..
