I would also check that the HT leads are proper old fashioned copper and not carbon/nylon. These are designed to suppress spark inducted radio signals amongst other things but really are a source of trouble on an old machine. I doubt whether a single carb on a manifold could be adjusted to give a rich mixture on one plug and a good mixture on the other so I would investigate the spark time the coil continuity and the distributor wear and cap condition before anything else is touched. A burnt or tracked cap can change the spark timing on one cylinder and throw everything out of kilter as mention before.

Solved!



A nice gentleman at the cafe informed me that the normal running position for the choke/air lever was in fact, forward.



Off to nutley windmill now, bike running well beyond my best expectations!



Grin? You could throw a ball in my mouth from 200 yards!

Hi Scalyback, the normal position for a properly mounted Air Lever should be Back, that is with the cable in tension and the air slide drawn up against it's spring into the carb top and not down in the airflow path! Please post a photo of how your lever is mounted, just in case yours has the wrong air lever fitted or perhaps mounted the wrong way round. REgards Dick.

Just had a look at Kevin's arrival video and it looks like his Air Lever is the proper one and mounted correctly, that being the case running with the lever forward will enrichen the mixture by restricting the intake area altering the air to fuel ratio ie the Starting Position! So the nice gentleman's advice is wrong! If it runs better with the air lever forward (slide down) that would indicate a weak mixture. Have a check of the jet sizes and main needle position. I had a look at the video of Kevin's arrival but cannot quite make out the handlebar layout. It looks to me as though have a normal choke lever on the right, which as Caboose says should be pulled fully back for normal running. Pushing it forward is only for cold starting. Caboose is right - we need a good shot of your handlebar controls and we can then then work this out for you. This would not however explain the different plug readings between right and left.

If Kevin runs better with the choke fully closed, this implies big fuel starvation.

I noticed that the lever didn't go all the way as it fouled the grip, so I took a vid. That's when the guy said it should be pulled, which pulls the cable and presubably lifts something in the Amal?

Ideally I guess, but I don't use it, just tickle the carb to start and leave the lever pointing towards me.

It was the hand written instructions that came with Kevin.
