I would also check that the HT leads are proper old fashioned copper and not carbon/nylon. These are designed to suppress spark inducted radio signals amongst other things but really are a source of trouble on an old machine. I doubt whether a single carb on a manifold could be adjusted to give a rich mixture on one plug and a good mixture on the other so I would investigate the spark time the coil continuity and the distributor wear and cap condition before anything else is touched. A burnt or tracked cap can change the spark timing on one cylinder and throw everything out of kilter as mention before.
