I do love this mother of invention stuff..

what about a spot of weld on the nut in the trough? Turn it into a captive nut spotted to the gearbox plate..

in the absence of a long bolt then weld the nut on the clear end to the stud to create a bolt..

That is if the bolt would clear the primary when withdrawn, I'm not going out in the rain to look..

Or create a stud from hex bar which you could then hold or turn with a spanner whilst holding the nut in position..

Hi Scaly,
Why not drill the nuts and brackets and wire the nuts to the brackets with locking wire? they might loosen but wont come off.

The stud can only be inserted from the accessible side.you cannot insert from the difficult side as the gearbox fouls the hole, thus the fiddling.

The idea of welding the nut to the bracket would work, just screw in the stud, then washer and nut. Problem is for me, we have no welder in the UK here.

but the cause was massive vibrations from the gearbox due to a (never to be repeated) error in chain adjustment. I think the locktite will hold this time.

Thanks again for all your comments and help. I really appreciate this.
