I do love this mother of invention stuff..
what about a spot of weld on the nut in the trough? Turn it into a captive nut spotted to the gearbox plate..
in the absence of a long bolt then weld the nut on the clear end to the stud to create a bolt..
That is if the bolt would clear the primary when withdrawn, I'm not going out in the rain to look..
Or create a stud from hex bar which you could then hold or turn with a spanner whilst holding the nut in position..
