Hi everyone at RE ownners club.

I am working on my RE Crusader sport 1959 and i cant find anything in the workshop manual on the set up for the tension on the springs, if you bolt it up all the way you cant pull the clutch lever in because the pressure plate is up against the plate that holds the three bolts and the six springs are fully compressed.
Is there a set distance for this or is it slacken off until the clutch slips and then adjust the three bolts until the plates are compressed so the clutch stops slipping?

There must be some incorrect or mismatched components in your clutch, because you should be able to tighten the bolts all the way down until they come to a stop and the pressure plate should be able to lift. check against a parts book illustration to see what you have, something is wrong. If you run with the bolts not all the way home, they will come loose and saw their way out through the primary case !!

Paul (Bullet Whisperer) makes a good point about mismatched parts; there are 2 different clutch baskets for the Crusaders, early models had 2 loose friction plates and later ones had 3. Yours should have the later type. Just to confuse things there are a number of similar looking clutches that were originally fitted to Villiers engined bikes (Greeves, Ambassador, etc etc,) that could also have been substituted at some point!
