the high capacity pumps have been fitted and the new spindle and worm drive too. I have to,say it sounds altogether quieter and I haven't had a clattering incident in the probably 200 miles since the work. It also feels as though it definitely running cooler. I went for a high speed fang down the motorway for about 30 to 40 mins at 60 to 65mph and there was no sign of the usual fractious behaviour or any pinking on take off that I used to get after a high speed run. So hopefully I've cured the clank ( although I'm not betting the house on it yet as it has had quiet spells before) and the bike is much happier on long distance high speed ( relatively) runs.
I did have a slightly disturbing occurrence today when I tried to roll the bike backwards and it came to a clunk stop. Forwards no probs backwards clunk. Turned out the Cush drive bolts on the back hub had all evenly undone and the one that the nut had finally fallen off had started to interfere with the brake. A ginger ride home and a new nut washer and split washer applied. You do need to check these bloody things with a spanner pretty damn regular!

Simon had that happen on a 54 Meteor we were riding a long way from home, I was following on my Inter and noticed smoke coming from the rear wheel. We stopped and the brake was locked up but I found that by backing the pedal off I could rotate the wheel forward but not backwards. As we were out in the bush about 150ks from home I decided if we rode carefully we could get closer to home, I said to ride gently, but once he hit 70mph I just backed off and expected to have to pick up the pieces if the wheel decided to lock up. He just casually said it was running fine so there was no problem apart from the fact I had disconected the rear brake. Turned out to be the ring inside that has the three studs as part of the cush drive had broken and it had all become a mangled mess jambed up with the brake shoes. I was pretty annoyed with his "she'll be right" attitude and I let him know I was not happy

exactly that Norm. It's clearly a weakness as I had to remake the one on the old bullet as it was munched. This one probably doesn't look as pretty as it did but all the studs tightened ok so I'll wait until I replace the rear tyre before I pull it apart to check it out properly.

Simon, what bike is it? I looked on the parts book for my 2003 Sixty5 rear hub, but there is no sign of any bolts in the cush drive.

Ok pretty definitive improvement from the replacement of the pump spindle and worm drive and the installation of the high capacity scavenge and feed pumps. I just came back from a motorway run up to a town called Orewa about 30 miles north and back. Fanged it all the way maintaining 60-65mph up hill and down and no hint of clatter or overheating. I understand that the additional oil flow from the hi cap pumps would assist with the cooling but I can't help feeling that the old set up was slipping teeth and the old oil pump was working at less than full flow. The bike was cool as a cucumber on my return and running like a swiss watch.
