Hi Ed
I've definitely seen it done, but a quick look on Google hasn't come up with any examples.
However - while acknowledging that I have an extremely impractical bike - I DO have to ask why?
I mean, if one were to list the advantages of a 'proper' rigid frame it would read
Low Seat Height (Looks Cool)
Low Ground Clearance (Looks Cool)
Looks Old Fashioned(Looks Cool)
Whereas, with the 'rod in place of a shock absorber' thing, it strikes me (apart from being a little quirky) you'll have bike that looks more or less the same but is really uncomfortable, handles less well, and is harder to ride.
Because I'm a big tart, I'm prepared to put up with a bike that (with the addition of its 40 degree rake and 2" ground clearance) is painful and a pig to ride, because...well see above.
Just saying...
