Greaser - having had a Thruxton, a Velo Clubman and an Atlas Café Racer - I would say as Alan R does - get one of these (I know, too late) which are purpose-built for the job you describe rather than a rather tame wannabe. When I tested the GT I came away thinking it would be a nice sit up and beg Enfield - wee bit more torque, nice colours and so on but pedestrian performance. I got back on my 04 classic 500 and ripped it up the street - much lighter, flickable, louder and generally more the real deal. Shocking finish to the GT exhaust silencer. I have just bought an EFI Woodsman and very happy but I will be asking for advice on how it can go on a diet.

Am I missing something here? Why is it ok to change the bike (a heavy-weight Woodsman) to make it lighter but not ok to change a bike (535 GT Continental) to make it quicker? If someone likes the look etc of a particular bike what's to stop him changing it in any way he chooses?

Agree, poor guy only came on here for some friendly ideas from like minded Enfield riders.

Presto - I think the guys are saying the GT even if tweaked is still going to be a bit pedestrian - they are not, at least I am not, saying don't tweak, just bear in mind that tweaking is going to deliver modest gains relative to his previous experience eg a Thruxton.

I guess he realised that - sure a GT wont be as quick as a Thruxton but it can be made quicker than standard without falling apart.

Thanks Presto, you Seem to be one who does understand.

Lucky Eddie says in his recent post that he is not arrogant just "accurate" ,I say he's more accurate at being arrogant, & condescending.
you will always find on most forums there's someone like him that just likes have a dig or a pop instead of trying be understanding & helpful, but I have to say the majority of fellow bikers are nothing like "eddied the head" thankfully !!

So let me try to explain to those like "lucky Eddie the head kid" who find my way of thinking difficult, I went for the 535GT because of the look & it was a kind of throwback nostalgia from the 250GT I had in the 60's,which I Loved, but I did know the performance of the 535 GT would not be brilliant, but something that could be improved which I intend to do , just like I did with my Thruxton
