There is nothing wrong with the Indian linings, my front brake will make the tyre squeal two up.

Hi Pict, I think your wise to fettle that front break and try and get the very best from it..

check the bearings while your at it, spoke tension and any runout on rim and drum..

Will be time well spent, and when all bedded in you'll have confidence that the darn thing will stop from 60mph if necessary and not just retard the progress slightly if your patient..

Believe me brake fade can be an excellent laxative… I fitted mr H's linings and english cable and my MOT walla was quite impressed..
Disc brake would probably out perform and pads are cheap but i do like the look of the polished twin leader.. cheers gwilly

I wonder have we lost sight of Picts original post, in particular his second sentence = The OEM linings appear to only be contacting the drum via a few glazed high spots. ...... will drum skimming, adjustment, modificatio square up what appears to me to be lumpy linings?

No Brian it wont, no amount of adjusting will compensate for linings which cannot contact the drum correctly. Sorry about your experience with the Cleckheaton company but pleased that I am not the only one to fall foul.

I also fell foul of the Cleckheaton company. I sent the shoes from my BMW R60/6 for relining. They were returned with a hollow under one section of the lining where they had ground too much from the shoe when they removed the old lining.

For non Enfield brakes I use a classic brake chap in the high peak area who keeps the Flash & a Box retarding as well as can be expected

Hi Pict. My original TLS front brake was woeful, and so eventually I got around to fitting Mr H's British shoes, and also a heavy duty cable. I also made sure that the brake was as perfectly balanced as I could get it. After all that I was rather disappointed with the results, and thought it was a waste of money. But as the shoes have slowly bedded in the brake has become very good (by comparison to how it was). I don't think these TLS brakes will ever be as good as a decent disc brake but it does now stop the bike reasonably well and doesn't make me feel like I'm not about to become part of the car in front at any moment. Of course I'll never know whether the old shoes would have performed just as well with the same amount of fettling and the heavy duty cable.....

Quite right Riggers - they need to wear in. Unless you get the shoes and drum matched properly on a lathe they are unlikely to be absolutely concentric.

And that, folks and Peter, is what Classic Brakes does for me and he sets up the brake so that I always have faith in my right hand being able to keep me from harm :)
