Norm, If the bikes been standing with the gearbox in bits i bet the batt hasn't been on a trickle charge.. Could be Duff..

Know the Lead acid ones don't like it, Not sure about Gel type...

Only other thing i can think off that has remained the same, even though you've changed the reg/rec twice is the earth wire from plug to harness..

No doubt you simply pluged in the replacement but the reg can't cream off the excess voltage if it cant return it to the battery easily.. i.e. High resistance..

Run a jumper wire from the earth pin Plug (black) direct to the neg post on the batt. If things straighten out then you have to carry out voltage drop tests on plug/cable and frame earth to find dry joint, broken wire or corrosion... With any luck he may not bring the bike back for a while.... gwilly.

Thanks Gwilly, you could have a point about the negative wire, certainly worth a look. The battery is fairly new and was out of another running bike. The 2nd bike is still here, apart from the gearbox being in boxes, everything electrical on it apart from the alternator and wiring loom has been scavenged by somebody previously so this should be interesting

Gwilly, was hoping nobody would notice, not many would pick up on that, but daylight saving time started this morning and it is Sunday morning as well.Couldn't sleep, was thinking about why this 1A interceptor was running so badly lol hopefully new coils and advance springs will fix it, but running out of time because the GP Ride is on in 2 weeks. Hope Mr H is quick with the bits

Just a quick update on this overcharging problem which I got back to a couple of days ago. A gel type battery was the problem. Tried it with a wet cell bat and charge rate was fine. I stopped using the gel type batteries a couple of years because of strange problems I was getting with them but this was the battery the owner had fitted.

Hi Norm, good info regards the gel battery, glad its sorted.. File that for future reference.. I expect its been siting uncharged for longer than the owner says..

Interesting: Surely the rec/reg could not allow more than 14v or so to pass. The state of the battery should be neither here or there. Electrics expert required here.

As I said in earlier post I had same problem. I think its if the voltage regulator can not sense correct resistance from battery it over compensates.

norm (and others) I had a similar problem whilst converting a ac/dc Suzuki trials bike to pure DC , as the bike was 6v , my supply of reg/recs were limited.
I got a unit from Rex Caunt , this was a 5 wire unit , 2 wire in , 2 wire out plus voltage sensing wire. if the sencing wire was not connected , the thing would put 9-10v into the battery ,(ouch) the AC output from the single (40w) coil was over 30v , however with the wire correctly connected, a nice 7.2v is present.

Hi Paul, you are on the money there, I have had a gel battery that reads 12.6 volts but put a test light on it and it falls over.
