I popped in to the Shop yesterday, Allan and another member of Staff have bought new GTs. I was very impressed with the quality and design, streets ahead of any previous Indian made bike I've seen. Allan really likes his (he says it's not perfect though!) and has sent it off to be Dyno'd to find out how much power they make. I also think a Twin would fit in that frame... Watch this space!

Even before you sit on or ride the new Continental GT, it’s clear that the factory has put a great deal of effort into making sure that this machine is spot on for looks and finish. The paintwork has an impressive depth and smoothness; the fittings are good quality and overall the bike looks ‘right’. Like the best examples of iconic ‘classic’ bikes, it’s a complete and stylishly integrated package.

Riding the bike proves that the Continental GT is not all looks! The first thing you notice as you switch on the ignition is that the needles of both clocks swing fully round and back again, showing all is well. Then there’s the lovely exhaust note – the deep throated sound of a big single. Clutch action is light and gear selection is positive and dependable. On the road the new frame proves its merits, with steering, road-holding, suspension and brakes responding faultlessly to road conditions and riding style. The ride is also surprisingly comfortable, despite the slim racy seat and the eye-catching clip-on bars. Some magazine test riders have remarked on vibration and performance, but this is a 535cc single cylinder push-rod engine and as such performs well. Best of all its great fun to ride, a bike you simply want to keep riding! All in all the Continental GT is by far the best Royal Enfield India has given us so far!

In due course we will be making a range of performance parts and accessories available.

Perhaps a set of black and chrome shrouds for the rear shock absorbers, and a decent sized Mikuni carb conversion kit if it still offers a worthwhile performance boost over the EFI.

Hopefully the factory will also develop a decent street scrambler model with that frame and the 535 motor.

I'll second that Adrian! A neat, slim, stylish ISDE 'enduro' style bike done with the same attention to detail and flare as the Continental GT. That'd be my choice! And it's a style of bike that has a very strong and growing market these days.

It's great to read Allan's report, as he certainly knows what's what when it comes to real-world Bullets!

The dyno results will make very interesting reading: I've seen a YouTube video of a standard late-model 500cc that was way below claimed figures on the dyno, so Hitchcock's tuning parts will surely be a useful upgrade for this 535cc factory model. The good thing is that this GT's frame, suspension & brakes should be well able to cope with the higher performance.

However, I suspect my Hitchcock's 612cc cafe-racer will still be faster: I feel another trip to Santa Pod Raceway's drag-strip coming on...

Hi All,

Well, as Mark M has revealed - I have the pleasure of owning the other GT 535, and I must say quite honestly that I expected to be a bit disappointed in some way with the bike ( typical Royal Enfield reaction I suppose ) but when they turned up and I rode mine I was just so chuffed with it. The whole package is superb making it a lovely little A & B road scratcher! This is my fifth Royal Enfield and second EFI so I feel I can be critical - this is in a league above all other Indian models. In answer to Martin C's comments - we have a 612 EFI under evaluation at this time, we need a few more miles on it before it is released. As for mine - I don't think I want to change a single thing !

I've had a test ride on one and loved it. Handles really well. Great fun on bendy roads. The engine was still a bit tight but it performed well for a single. The gearbox is slick and smooth. I found myself quickly snicking up and down the box to keep it on the power. The riding position isn't really rear-set enough for me. I'm 6ft 4ins and although my feet were comfortably positioned, the high clip-ons caused me to sit almost bolt upright. Brakes are more than enough for the bike. My only negative observation is the vibration through the handlebars. Noticeable mainly during spirited acceleration. It's a very pretty bike. In my opinion, the best looking Enfield so far - and the most fun to ride. If I had the spare cash I would buy one - even though I already own an '05 Triumph Thruxton.

When are these supposed to be here in the states? Talk about anticipation! On the clip-ons, would they fit mounted "between" the triple trees and still clear the tank? And, I would think the vibration through the bars would be slightly less perhaps?

I personally found the handlebars a bit wide. They are 3 inches longer than the ones on my Thruxton. Maybe shortening them might make a difference. Whether they would fit under the yoke remains to be seen. Maybe one of the new GT owners will try.
