Mines an 06 Electra X and it so long as it's in neutral it matters not if it's in or out it will turn over. In gear the lever must in. Can't explain the difference!

I'm as puzzled as you are. Mind you, It's more logical to switch the power to the solenoid than it is to the TCI unit. Why allow the engine to spin without a spark when you can just stop the engine spinning in the first place? I have to admit, it's how I'd design the electrics (once the engine is running, the solenoid is redundant, so switch it out of circuit). I've no idea if this Electa X was wired this way by Enfield themselves, or it was a mod by a previous owner. How many other Electa X owners have oddball electrics?

The circuit diagram shows exactly how mine is wired. 3 wires to clutch switch, brown to earth via the neutral switch. Green straight to earth and black to the starter relay. With the lever out the switch connects the brown and black. With the lever in it connects the earth on the green to black. All I can say really!

Frank, just wondering about the circuitry. The way its drawn it looks like with the box in neutral the light will be lite.

If you pull in the clutch does the neutral light go out? Looks like it should as it receives its power through the clutch switch...
Which when pulled in diverts the return from the solenoid to earth...

If you pull in the clutch and the neutral light goes out, but no starter.. then could it be the earth wire at fault or even the clutch switch itself..

Seemed like a good idea but now i have a headache..

The neutal light didn't go out when the clutch lever was pulled. The engine simply didn't spin. I've got this feeling that the green Earth wire isn't connected. It's the only rational explanation. I'm not worried about it though. It just means that the bike can't be started when it's in gear.

Gwilly, thanks, you are not the only one with a headache! Mine is not the bike with the problem. Mine seems to be ok and functioning as per the circuit diagram suggests it should. Suffice to say I think Barry and Johno have both probably got issues with the clutch switch. I had similar problems when the bike was new and the switch was replaced under warranty. Since then it has behaved perfectly. I shall butt out of this now for fear of complicating matters!
