Freddy, I would make up a dipstick using a 1m length of 6mm aluminium tubing available from a DIY merchant. Paint a 1cm wide band around it between 37 and 38cm from the bottom and plug the end of the tube with araldite or filler to prevent oil being drawn out inside the tube. With 200ml of oil in each leg the level should be up within the band.I use 10w-30 fork oil with no problem. The first time I drained mine after 8000miles I found only about 100ml in each leg. What happened to the rest I've no idea, no leaks etc. Filling to the correct level didn't seem to affect ride quality either.

Yes 6mm rod would be better but tube is what b&q had so tube it was. 8mm would be too thick to go down to the bottom of the fork.

What is all this about fancy tube from B&Q?? We are RE owners - surely we use straightened out coathanger wire for such things.....

On the old series forks you simply undo the little BA plug in the middle of the securing nut at the bottom of each leg then fill them up until the oil starts to drip out. I presume the later series doesn't have this function?
