Well, the bike has gone to the doctors for diagnosis and repair. I had a call from the dealer yesterday and they say the plug is the wrong sort.

Given that the trouble originally started with the plug that the bike came with, and the fact that the plug in use is advertised in our host's catalogue as suitable for all efi, I don't think that's the real issue.

They replaced the plug with the original twin electrode and took it for a brief run and said it ran fine (which it was doing for very short runs) but that the revs started to fall away when the bike was stopped at traffic lights. That is exactly what was happening when the trouble started.

So, I'm thinking 02 sensor malfunction maybe? Anyway they are going to take it for a longer run when it stops snowing and follow it with a recovery vehicle just in case.

-------- Well stone me !! That says it all, I think ?? The dealer following behind his test rider with a recovery vehicle---- Why don't we all get one with a new bike then ?? LoL !!----- I thought these "modern" machines had a Plug-in diagnostic feature so that our budding "mechanic" can be told what's wrong AND how to fix it ??--- You are probably right re}-the O2 sensor (or the CPU not reading the incoming info correctly?)----

Hi Jim,

I have a 2011 EFI Standard that had similar problems. Started using it when the weather was really cold early 2012 (in Switzerland). Started fine but after about 1km it would loose power, changed down but eventually had to stop and could not keep the engine running. Difficult to restart, but after a couple of minutes it would run and for the rest of the day, no problem. After the weather warmed up I took it back to the dealer and he changed the ECU. This seems to have cured the problem, although I also changed my starting habit and let the engine tick over for a few minutes before riding. I think the bike was not designed for such cold weather and until the bike has warmed up in winter, the sensors are not giving the range of signals expected by the ECU. Anyway, this winter no repeat of the problem and I now have 6,000+ km.
By the way, my dealer later removed the automatic decompressor, as I complained about the noise it made. He informed me later that this mod was a standard on all new bikes being delivered by Watsonian. (My bike came new from a reputed German dealer with 25 years of Enfield experience.) I would disregard the state of the plug, unless you have some very bad fuel consumption. Best regards TrevorCH

Jim,
Oops I hadn't realised you have an EFI - so all that stuff about your cold start system is probably way off. However I'm reasonably sure you don't have what would technically be called a choke.
