I would turn the tickover screw half a turn in (faster idle) and if you can get the bike started with 90% carb cover quickly remove this cover when started and blip the throttle a few times.Exhaust valve?????????????? I take it you have clearances in them push rods?

I think that any engine that runs so briefly will show signs of a wet plug so I don't think this is necessarily indicatve of a rich mixture as being the fault. Certainly it would be worth checking out the valve clearances and doing a compression check to see if there is an issue with a leaking or stuck valve, especially as this problem started after a lay up. It could be with all the fiddling to date you have introduced a second problem which is masking the first. You have put a new iridium plug in, have you gone back to the original or tried another, preferably standard plug?

Thanks for taking the time to answer , in fact I've Found that after 3 or 4 tries with the choke if I cut the choke before the engine dies she starts ok (blipping the throttle at the same time), the good news is that once started she runs just as nicely as before , no strange noises , even idle is just the same as before.
Why this sudden aversion to the choke?
I'll check the valve clearance once again , just in case....

I would have a play with the pilot jet, maybe fit a new one and see how that goes, sometimes you can't see anything wrong with them but replacing often fixes the problem

Now I do feel totally and utterly stupid!!!!
This morning went to see a friend who owns a sall motorbike and scooter shop , told of my problem.
His answer was short: go back home and clean that carb!!
"But I've cleaned it about 5 times!!!"
"Start again!!Focus on the choke, something's blocking it"
"But....."
"Go home and clean that carb!!"
So I went back home , cleaned the carb , air line and carb cleaner , focused on the choke ....put it back on the bike and......nothing , same as before.
Took it off again , to bring to my friend , took the carb bowl off to empty the petrol , and there the obvious answer was just in front of my eyes: I'd cleaned the carb but had only given a quick wipe to the inside of the bowl....but the choke petrol inlet is in a moulding in the carb , like a small well , and the petrol fills it by a small hole at the bottom....now you've guessed , THIS hole was blocked.
Everything back to normal , but I do feel stupid, so thanks VERY much to everyone who answered me.....

Hi matey and Bloomin' HOO-RAY !! I bet you feel better now ?? Anyway---well done, especially to come back and let us know.. It might just inspire another out there in similar circumstances---------- Can I take a moment to "Blow the trumpet" ?? This is not for myself but for a process that many people still view with disbelief ie ULTRASONIC CLEANING...I mentioned it earlier in this thread... It REALLY DOES WORK especially with those small drilling's etc associated with the primary and choke systems...Please do have a look at this }------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhGyK6MpkOQ --------------- Hope that's of some help for another time ????
