Good,if you remove the pipe from the carb a little, fuel should pee out. What about the rust in the tank?

Norm I did that, I took the filter off and refitted the hose (without the filter) then I took the bike for a little ride, it seems that the problem is somewhere in the filter

Hi guys----------- just to re-iterate, the filter shown on my Bullet has been in service now for over a year = 3,500 mile approx. and has never given the slightest bit of trouble,---honestly !!- PAT, can you post a photo of the filter you have fitted ??.... BTW, mine only fills up to about halfway at best...I do give it the occasional "flik" with my fingertip which adds a bit more, but not much..I have similar "in-line" filters on my 1975 GL1000 Goldwing, CB400 Hondamatic, and various 50cc Terror-Rad bikes and ALL run perfectly ok.....Be wary of the cheapie paper element type( as sold at shows etc)--I had one where the rear face of the filtering element was breaking up---and the next stop was the primary jets in the Carb !! Very frustrating when trying to fault-find and you've just fitted this new filter--so it can't be that at fault, can it ????? LoL !! Go for the metal strainer type instead.

Pat,
I have also had these filters airlock as well for no apparent reason. Try this one, remove the hose from the carby, turn the fuel on, let it flow and quickly refit the hose on the carb, you now have removed the air bubble in the pipe, but remember this bubble can reapear if you run out of fuel, not every time because by the next time it hasppens you will have forgotten about this little saga and will start looking at points etc because you have just refilled the tank, so it can't be out of fuel

As mentioned already: Clean and coat the inside of the tank! My tank (1953 Model G) was very dirty inside when I got the bike in 2001. I put in two handfuls of nuts and bolts (counting them before dropping then in) and sloshed it around with hot water and detergent. I repeated this a couple of times and really got out a lot of dirt and some rust too. Then I treated the tank with Bill Hirsch tank sealer. It's a three step procedure: Cleaning (again....), etching and coating. Now, 11 years later, the white coating inside is still like new. I have never bothered with more filters than those present in the fuel taps and carb intake, and never had a problem with any dirt in the fuel system. .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- This Bill Hirsch sealer is also ethanol resistant. I can only recommend it highly! (I don't get paid to write this!) .-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.- Regards Anders F. R.

Thanks all for your tips
Norm I will try that tom and let you know….also what am thinking of is that currently the tank is well below half full so not enough pressure is being delivered to the fuel….maybe this is the cause of my problem.
Thanks

Pat,
Half full tank isn't the problem, it is gravity fed so will run right till empty. Problem will be an airlock because you come out of the bottom of the tank and by the time you get to the carby inlet you have to come back up and over and this causes the airlock the the top bend of the hose, get that air out and you should be fine
