Hi Norton Freak.
I recently had the same problem as you describe. After trying all of the usual stuff I took off the points cover whilst the bike was ticking over, allbeit rather quickly, and placed my finger on the rotating points cam and pressed lightly.Normal tickover was immediatly resumed.
The spring tension was insufficient to return the bob weights to the correct position. The drag on the cam caused by my finger pressure completed the job of the springs.
So,I fitted new springs which made no detectable difference.I noticed that the two anchorage pionts for the springs which are situated on the back plate were very slightly bent towards the workings of the unit so I gently bent them outwards so they were at 90 degrees to the plate, problem solved!
The slight bending of the anchorage tags (5 or 6 degrees perhaps)had restored sufficient tension to the springs to allow them to function correctly.
It worked for me,I hope it may for you.
Cheers Dave P.
