OK then, increase speed = more air. So you can have air leak + flooding (or badly adjusted pilot screw), or cold start start malfunction but you are getting more air from somewhere. Excessive fuel on it's own won't increase revs.

Just had another thought - does this logic sound right. The warmer the engine gets the faster the revs, therefore are you using the fuel enrichner the right way round? If you are new (this is a guess) to bullets with a VM carb and are familiar with Amals you could be using the cold start system the wrong way round. Just a thought. Have I got this right - you bought a whole new carb and still have the same problem?

Hi All.
I decided to follow Winkie's advice and work through the things you would do on a Service.

Valve/Pushrod Clearance - Found the Exhaust was OK (Could just rotate Pushrod) but the Pushrod looked slightly bent. Found Inlet had a gap of 4mm (>1/8"). Adjusted inlet to Nil (Pushrod would just rotate). Although Exhaust Pushrod looked bent I could rotate it 360 degrees so thought it acceptable for now.

Ignition Timing - Points gap acceptable. Points opened at TDC Retarded(should be 0.8mm BTDC). Points opened 9mm BTDC fully Advanced (Hitchcocks say 8.5mm). I considered these to be acceptable.

I was going to move onto Valve Timing but couldn't get the bent Exhaust Pushrod and massive Inlet Valve clearance out of my head. I feel there is more to be found so I have decided to remove the Head and Barrels and check out the Bores/Pistons/Valves/ Seats/Guides etc.

Thank you all for the interest shown and the advice.
Cheers.
Mick.

the adjusters are often not quite in line with the rods - wouldn't worry about this.

Hi Norton Freak.
I recently had the same problem as you describe. After trying all of the usual stuff I took off the points cover whilst the bike was ticking over, allbeit rather quickly, and placed my finger on the rotating points cam and pressed lightly.Normal tickover was immediatly resumed.
The spring tension was insufficient to return the bob weights to the correct position. The drag on the cam caused by my finger pressure completed the job of the springs.
So,I fitted new springs which made no detectable difference.I noticed that the two anchorage pionts for the springs which are situated on the back plate were very slightly bent towards the workings of the unit so I gently bent them outwards so they were at 90 degrees to the plate, problem solved!
The slight bending of the anchorage tags (5 or 6 degrees perhaps)had restored sufficient tension to the springs to allow them to function correctly.
It worked for me,I hope it may for you.
Cheers Dave P.
