Hi All,

I have a 2001 Enfield Bullet 350 Export model which I recently purchased. When going up hill I had noticed the clutch was slipping and on inspection of the cable as well as being routed incorrectly (it lays across the barrel) there was no slack whatsoever in the cable at the ends or centre adjuster. As I have Minda controls without adjusters fitted I checked which cable I should be using by looking on here and fitted a new OE replacement which came with the bike which had the correct part number however I have exactly the same problem as before, no slack.

So I have several questions.

Is there a way of identifying what type of handlebar controls should be on my enfield? I am starting to wonder if perhaps the reason for my problems is that my Minda clutch lever perhaps should have a screw in adjuster and cable to suit?

Should the non adjuster Minda cable 145408 still fit my Minda lever with the adjusters removed?

Does anyone know where I can buy adjusters for the Minda controls if they should be fitted?

I would be very grateful for any assistance please.

Cheers

Hi ACOT 56---------- why not give our hosts a telephone call and have a tech. chat ?? I have the same type of cable fitted on my 2005 500cc Classic but there seems plenty of adjustment--albeit done midway along the length of it. It would be very useful if we / someone could come up with a Mod. to give a handlebar adjuster.

I have now re-examined the clutch control and discovered that the body fitted to the handlebar is indeed threaded so at some point the adjusters have been discarded I am guessing.

I have spoken to Hitchcocks as suggested and explained my problem but they are unable to help and have suggested I look at the clutch problem technical pdf which I have just downloaded so I guess I will be stripping the clutch down to see if anything is amiss there. I would still like to know if the clutch handlebar body for the adjuster and non-adjuster versions are essentially identical if anyone knows please respond! Something is obviously not right as the cable is not supposed to be so short that it is tight across the barrel?

I`m new on here and have the 535cc lightning export model,my adjustment is midway on the cable.
If your clutch slip is uphill you could have the wrong type of engine oil? (don`t bite my head off).
My cable just touches the top of the engine and runs just under the top engine stabilizer threaded bolt.
You have an initial adjustment behind the swing inspection cover above the kickstart.

I first adjusted the old cable by opening the swing cover and slackening the locknut and unscrewing the adjuster (the previous owner had wound it in quite away presumably to get the cable to reach) I have reset it so the clutch is just engaging, then I slackened it off 1/4 turn and locked the nut but the adjuster is almost on the starting thread and there is still no free play in the cable - I have even cut the locknut off in the middle of my original cable to try and get some free play but this has made very little difference so I can either wind the clutch adjustment in to gain some slack but I will be slipping the clutch or find the correct set up somehow! Does anyone have a clutch cable for Minda levers with adjusters lying around that they could measure the outer and the inner so I can compare?

Thank you

The levers and cable types are a nightmare on these bikes, they seem to change design frequently. Seems they had minda levers from 1999 to june 2001 with adjusters. clutch cable 143310. (longer for higher handlebars
143310L)............. from june 2001 minda's with no adjuster on lever. cable needed 145408 with adjust in the cable middle. sounds like PO got wrong (mk2) cable which has longer outer cable and had to remove adjuster from lever to get it to fit. obtain lever adjuster and 143310 cable or change lever to (mk2) ............ as a tip, tighten the screw adjuster on the gearbox till it just touches the push rod and nip up the locknut. honestly the plates need all the lift they can get to help prevent drag, far worse than slip in my opinion. IF this makes sense then explain it to me. regards gwilly.

--------just been into the garage and }----My No.1 Bullet (2005 Classic 500) has cranked MINDA lever --- no adjuster OR thread ---- cable runs over the cyl.head and down past the carb where an in-line adjuster is fitted---then into the upper-back of the gearbox. No.2 Bullet (1992 Classic 500) has straight MAGURA lever with built-in screwed adjuster and locknut. The cable -run is down the front L/S of the engine where there is an in-line adjuster just in front of the distributor. The cable then goes into the the upper-back of the gearbox case. Have a look at JOHNSON CABLES as they manufacture to order as well as supplying parts. I've had several "Extended" cables made to original patterns supplied.

Hello again----I believe JAFFA 90 was referring to the PRIMARY CHAINCASE OIL, not the oil actually in the engine.. Try changing to an ATF type. You'll find it works a treat, especially if the PO has put eng oil in there. AND, whilst in the "Let's buy some ATF oil"mood---try some in the forks as well. My bet is you'll find eng. oil in there as well ? SHOCKING !!--or rather STUNNING is more like it !!

Main problem is the cables in a lot of cases are just made wrong so you can't get the adjusters to fit
