Fitting valve guides; head in the oven when "she" isn't in - guides on the freezer. They should slide in no problem.

"Spot-on", PETE F, that's exactly my home method as well----including the "SHE" factor LoL !!! Last time I used the "domestic furnace" my neighbour & I were overhauling an early JAP speedway engine. We had the crankcase halves in there when it occurred to us that they were made out of magnesium !! OOOoeerrrrrr-----

Pete f what a great idea but I will still leave it to the professionals as I want the valve seats cutting as well.
I,d just like to say what a great service our host provides.I ordered a secondhand head new gasket/seals,head nuts and guides
yesterday and they arrived today. The head will need shotblasting and a lick of paint before the guides go in and to top it all
the suns come out. Grrrrr great

---------Grrr, Just a thought. That should read CYLINDER HEAD into oven, not your own bacon bonce !!!Lol..........Might prove a tad uncomfortable ?? Why not have a go at cutting and lapping the valves and seats yourself ?? It really isn't difficult, you gain a new skill, and you can save a whole wad of dosh into the bargain. !! OR }--- ask the lads at your head shop to give you a demo ?? It really is }---------SIMPLES !!!

Ok back to the job in hand.Head from host was shotblasted/painted then dropped into coventry boring for new guides and valve /seats cut.
put the head on got her her running till hot same problem smoke pouring from the head.Couldn,t see anything so removed the tank and rocker cover and got her up to temperature again smoke everywhere in and out of the head. Lots of oil pumping out of the rockers I knew they where worn so as a last resort I nipped down to our host and purchased the new rockers.Went home fitted them got her running till hot same thing again.Host says to drop the head in so they can check it out.

I have a 1953 Model G (hopefully I haven't troubled you with that one too much before...), and first of all I can just state these facts: >>> 1. The Model G engine is the one showed in the youtube clip, with iron head and barrel. >>> 2. This engine has only one alloy rocker cover with a simple cork gasket visible all around the head. >>> 3. The valve lifter has no connection to the head whatsoever, it just lifts the exhaust valve. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. As Les H points out, smoke coming only from the head and not from the exhaust is not likely at all to come from inside the cylinder. So most probably there is an oil leak somewhere else. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. The most likely places for oil to leak is >>> a) around the rocker cover, >>> b) around the pushrods where the head meets the cylinder, >>> c) where the oil feed connects to the head, or (this is a long shot) >>> d) through or along the valve guides. There really aren't any more places, I think. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. a) to c) are all easily visible from outside. My G engine has a "type B leak", but that has never caused any smoke at all, just some oil down the cylinder obove the valve adjustment cover. a) might cause smoke but should be easy to locate. c) is just too simple to find One must be blind not to see it! d) can cause pressure inside the rocker cover that MAY press oil hot oil and gases out through b), but that should then be visible. Also, what is the probability that two heads has the same fault? -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. You say that "lots of oil pumping out of the rockers" when running with the tank and rocker covers off. Yes, of course! That is how the rockers are lubricated...... That oil should not produce smoke unless there is a leak somewhere. -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. >>> Are you REALLY shure that the rocker cover gasket is good and you can't see any oil leak there? >>> Are you also 100 % shure that the head is clean and dry in all nooks and crannies? There are a few hidden spaces between fins etc. on this iron head that are VERY difficult to clean out completely and may be full of oil or grease that causes smoke. >>> Are you 100 % shure that it is not the wrong type of paint and it can't stand the heat? It gets pretty hot around the exhaust..... -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. This is strange. From my experience from owning, rebuilding, riding and maintaining a Model G for 11 years I really can't figure out what might be the problem. Sorry! -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-. PLEASE tell us when you have solved this! Good luck! Regards, Anders F. R.

Please, can someone fix this forum so that we may have paragraphs as we want, not all of the text in one long, unreadable batch......

I,m baffled as well, I,ve even made a video with my phone showing the smoke to show our host when I drop the head into them. There is a void in the head where crap can collect but that would have been burned away by now. There is no leak from the head gasket, there is no smoke from the exhaust to me there is oil leaking out of the head into that void and that,s causing all the smoke .I too thought maybe rocker cover was leaking or oil feed connection on head was leaking but it,s dry
all round. I,ve had the engine running without the rocker cover and no oil was seeping out over the head but once engine was hot there was smoke from exhaust side of the head and from around exhaust valve where oil from rocker had settled and from the the void fin outlets at front and rear and behind the spark plug.
