Hi All
2004 500 Bullet 65 8,000 Miles

Over a period I seem to have lost most of my compression. Fairly hard to start but once running power is still there. Still no compression starting when warm, but still OK when running.
So I bit the bullet and took the head off.
This is what my exhast valve looked like……

If you can see it what are these little blobs of metal embedded in the seat of the valve?
If this pic does not show on this site I shall try and explain what you could see.
No pic. So,Around the edge of the valve where it seals onto the seat are about 5 blobs about 1mm diameter wealded onto the seat for about a quarter of the way round. These obviously hold the valve open. Why, How, Any answers please.
Cheers Fred
PS How do you put pics on this site?

If you have a photobucket account, copy and paste the HTML code from the list of four options on each image.
Make sure the uploaded image is a sensible size, I go no bigger than 800x600 pixels for web viewing otherwise it takes over the screen and messes up the message formatting.

Not sure what your problem blobs are, a pic would certainly help, nothing obviously damaged or have any bits missing?

hi freddy ,i had this problem with my 350 bullet also 2004,blobs on exhaust valve stopping it seat ,i thought that it must have been contamination from the origional build as my bullet had only done 75 miles when i purchased it so the head had not been off before.i bough a set of new valves for £12 off ebay ground the new exhaust valve in ,10000 miles later good as gold ,cheers paul.

Hi FREDDY W ------ what spec oil are you using ?? It might --and I repeat-->--> MIGHT be metallic deposits formed from a high ash-bearing oil. I haven't heard of this for many-a year. Remember ---- help us to help you. So, is the Bullet 65 standard OR are there ANY changes that have been done ??? (Usually to the exhaust, carb & air filter parts ). How does the inlet yalve look by comparison ?? In any event it's not a ---"they all do that, Sir !!"situation. It sounds like it's overheating. Without any photos to go on my advice---at this particular juncture-----is to follow GRUNDA 12's example and obtain a new Ex. Valve etc.

I have joined photobucket so I shall try to load some pics Thanks m1ks……..
Grunda Went the same way as you, bought the new larger exhaust V/V from hosts and other bits for the rebuild……
Ex V/V would not lap in and on closer inspection Saw that there was a ridge going round the seat and the V/V would not sit down proper as the seat was slightly down in from the surface of the head chamber. I believe this is valve seat recession or regression whatever.--------
As this needs to be done proper I have taken the head and bits down to the big man in Rockhampton near Berkley, South GLOS. His opinion was that valve seat recession could be caused by weak mixture or bad metal.-------

Alan R Oil is Hal fords 20/50 changed every 1500 Miles. ……… Goldie silencer, Pancake air filter, Jets etc. as per Hitchcock’s recommendations…..Main 125, Needle jet p2, Pilot 30, Slide 2.5.

Hello there matey !!--------------that last picture tells its'own story I think. Look at the colour of the spark plug and the amount/colour of deposits on the exhaust valve face. That has all the trappings of a weak (Hot) running engine. I've been racking my on-board, biological PC ie Der Brain ! in its' RAM mode setting, but still can't remember just when I've seen a valve seat just like that one with the Blobs on. Meantime, have a read of this }--------------- http://www.aa1car.com/library/ar1192.htm --------------- I fitted our hosts larger headed valve with Bronze guides last winter. Best regards. Alan R

----------have a close look at picture No.2 at the lower part, left of centre. Is that a hairline crack running vertically ??----- Don't forget that our hosts settings are recommendations for a starting point, not the final Nos etc.

Hi…. Have got my head back with new guides and larger V/V head fitted. Boxed everything up with new Samrat rockers, every thing to the right torque etc. ……………. Tried to start it Saturday morning………No joy, kicked and kicked, no joy. Checked everything no spark, no deflection of ammeter, checked battery, hoped fuel was getting to carburetor so went and watched Thomas the tank engine with grandson for a think. After ½ hour and getting fed up with Tosser, he can’t pronounce Thomas, I had a revelation. The kill switch. Checked it switched it to run and it started first kick, what a tosser……………Went for 30 mile run, sounds sweet…………………….The question is, how many heat cycles should I put it through before I re-torque the head bolt, 24 ft lb I presume…….Will do plug chops once I’ve retorqued….
Regards Fred and thanks all who contributed

And now, a secret never to be told------------------- I forgot to do my re-torques last Jan. and guess what happened ?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------>>>>>>>>>>>>>>------------------------------------------->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>-----------------------------------------NOTHING !!...nothings gone wrong !! And that's over 1,000 miles ago. Iron barrel, composite gasket, NO GLUE etc. Have a nice run and enjoy the fruits of your labours ( not to mention CASH OUTLAY ).
