Ok chaps here goes. My post was of a genuine concern and anyone who does not wish our primary suppliers of parts to be vigilant over the quality of their parts is to be honest a pratt and we all have a duty to inform them should we see a concern that they might wish to investigate .I can only express my confirmation that their service has proved excellent and that I am not knocking them but offering advice.I work under the assumption that our hosts do look upon this forum for prospective problems but am dissapointed that they have not entered into this thread to demonstrate this. Fellow posters on this forum are always free to question my mechanical aptitude but had they seen how big and ugly I am I would suggest they might restrain from doing so until they had read and understood where the thread originated.
I have today taken the trouble to measure the clutch cable on a few local machines ( goldie bonnie and ajay jampot the latter I used to own )and all had cables of 2.25 to 3 mm diameter on the clutch.
I have also looked at the threads that johnny singles put up and neither were really representative of the electra which posed the first problem .
So here is the rub Mr H what is the spec of cable that you offer? Johnny and apparently lucky bugger have you never had any problems and have you questioned mmm Why did it do this ?What can I do ? How can I improve this ? and more importantly how can I help others to avoid this problem .Johnny you are most welcome to come up for a trip and we can try to resolve the setting up of an electra clutch and I will see to it that you are fed and accomodated most royally . In the WREOC we go on rides in all sorts of weather and terrain and in the event of a breakdown for any reason we put our heads together but the lead is always left to the owner of the bike concerned without quibble and suprise suprise to see the knowledge and expertise of the riders would open your eyes. Grunda is one of those that have demonstrated to me his extensive knowledge of the marque and having been witness to the relevant incident it is no suprise to me that he has expressed his dicomfort at some of the posts on this forum. Cheers chaps rant over

Noel,
Well said, and I'm a Grunda fan, he tries hard. This bit of info now is for 5 speeds so people with 4 speeds please stop offering advice as it has no relevance to the 4 speed, completely different setup. As for the cable breaking in the box on the Electra it is usually as a result of the clamp the cable nipple fits into, it causes the cable to flex and a flexing cable WILL always break regardless of the thickness of the cable, just a thicker one takes longer to break. The cable clip has to be able to freely float. As I said in an earlier post it was a design fault, rectified on later models.

Norm, If you had taken the time to look at johnny's video you might have noticed that it was a 5 speed box and not a 4 speed one.

Yes I have two four speed bikes and one five speed and the one in my vid is the five speed.
I will continue to post on this and other classic bike forums as long as the majority of forum members want and for those who want practical advise as appossed to those who reply with reems of the most technical information that to the avarage Enfield owner may as well be quantum machanics. like most forums most of the posters do a great job. If you take good care of your bike you should have few problems with it. The only bikes that never go wrong are the ones that are ony polished and never ridden. Now i'm off back to the workshop.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but i have an observation and a question. Then promise will never speak of it again. i measured the original clutch cable still fitted to my 2002 500es and found it to be 1.9mm in diameter, the new english made one i bought from our host last year to carry as a spare measured 1.9mm dia. Not much change in spec in ten years. Now my question is something i've pondered for years. some say the english nylon lined cables should not be oiled as this messes up the natural slippage of nylon. probably assiting the build up of grime sticking to the oil. ok so if you acquire a bike with new cables fitted, how the heck can you tell if there lined or not? each end of the outer cable has a ferrule crimped in place and you can only see the inner cable coming through the ferrule??? Do you force oil down it regardless??? of course lever pivots and such are oiled /greased. Just wondering....... i know i need to get out more.
cheers all gwilly.
