Sorry Peter, been too busy all day to get near the computer. Alan the Boyer power box would certainly eliminate the need for the 2 rec/reg units but they are costly and then the wiring would need to be altered.
Peter, what I would do is disconect the orange/yellow from one rec/reg unit and with the motor up to 2000 rpm check the D/C input to the battery, that is by having the meter set to D/C and across the battery terminals. If the rec/reg unit is working you should see maybe 12.8/13,volts. If you get this then check the other rec/reg unit in the same way and you should get a similar or slightly better reading. If not I would be suspicious of the rec/reg unit that didn't measure up. Problem is both units could be sus, but if you are running of only one set of coils from the alt it won't keep up if you use your headlight. Both sets of coils in the alt must be producing to keep the battery charged. Good luck
