Gents... I have performed this test and it looks ok, so reg/rec investigation is the next move.
If anyone wants to talk me through it, that would be appreciated. What wires to disconnect and will it still be on the AC setting on the meter? I couldn't use the testune meter as the options were limited, so I used an ancient meter with all the right options on it.

Sorry Peter, been too busy all day to get near the computer. Alan the Boyer power box would certainly eliminate the need for the 2 rec/reg units but they are costly and then the wiring would need to be altered.
Peter, what I would do is disconect the orange/yellow from one rec/reg unit and with the motor up to 2000 rpm check the D/C input to the battery, that is by having the meter set to D/C and across the battery terminals. If the rec/reg unit is working you should see maybe 12.8/13,volts. If you get this then check the other rec/reg unit in the same way and you should get a similar or slightly better reading. If not I would be suspicious of the rec/reg unit that didn't measure up. Problem is both units could be sus, but if you are running of only one set of coils from the alt it won't keep up if you use your headlight. Both sets of coils in the alt must be producing to keep the battery charged. Good luck

Cheers Norm I will try this later. I have found that an earth connection was a little loose, so that has been tightened up to eleiminate this from the equation. Wouldn't it be embarassing if that's all it was? Battery seems a bit suspect as it only read just over 12v when it had been charged overnight so it could be all it is. Will try the tesreg/reg test later.

Peter,
I did think about a loose earth a few days ago but forgot and got too wound up in looking at the drawings
