Trouble is if you leave the cap "loose" there is no non-return valve in the breather and there should always be one in an engine breather. On engines with this sort of oil tank cap the main breather is usually at the base of the cylinder which is a better place for it anyway.

By quill bushing do you mean the seal on the worm nut on the end of the crank? On later models, these have a bonded seal and you would replace the whole thing. I think they're about £15. Remember they are reverse threaded.
