Hi WDCO42 the filter is there to filter all the oil but due partly due to a senior moment it seems it may not filter all of the oil all of the time, depending on how the PRV works, so I am working on a small redesign to ensure 100 % of the oil goes through the filter.

WD, if it wasn't for the after market pressure relief valve then all the oil would go to the rockers. As it is, a bit of replumbing will be required. Could be tricky.

Hi. Q for Leon, in the photo is the pipe to the crankshaft nut bleeding or feeding?

Dont know if there were variations but on my 1965 350 redditch engine the relief valve returns oil through a gallery under the tappets into the oiltank bypassing the timing gears. (it intersects at the weir hole) Which differs from our hosts version which of course feeds into tappets. So a valve stuck open starves both rockers and gears. I had a model WD/c in the workshop with a stuck valve and the gears were all junked. Vince

Hello there, the oiling system on Leon's picture looks like very much an arrangement Fritz Egli made for the Bullet, ie the relief valve on the FEEDING cicuit that directed all the surplus oil to the rockers for extra lubrication when the engine was cold(I owned one for some years). The idea was blanking the crankshaft relief valve (when there was one) and transpose it to a much more accessible area (the feed bolt), and have a fully calibrated relief valve that directed CLEAN oil to he rockers.

One thing I don't understand on Steve T's modification is that the oil ils filtered on the RETURN circuit. I don't se the interest. I know it is the vast majority of all the british bikes to have that system, but it was for economical reasons (have some kind of filtration without the need to modifie the original oiling system). We, RE's owners have one luck (if it is the only one), is that our bikes have the oil filtered BEFORE it goes to the critical parts of the engine. So my question....

Hi Vince: The bike is not mine and was posted on the Australian Royal Enfield Club message board as shown in 2004. From what I can remember, its main purpose is the sight gauge for checking if oil is flowing at all, then through an oil filter at the front of the engine before going up to the rockers. Sorry I can`t be more helpful.

WD thanks for your comments, I have fitted the oil filter so all oil will be filtered more finely than the standard filter, which is still fitted. My view is that the oil will be clean and possibly cooler as the filter is catching a bit of breeze when it goes to the head, which can be no bad thing also it ups the capacity slightly. Whether it is fitted feed or scavenge doesn't matter as all oil will be cleaner and as I said the original filter is still in place. Having spent a lot on a rebuild its a matter of belts and braces;-)). I am presently awaiting some materials to finish off so all oil will go through the filter before the rockers.
