Thanks all, there is quite a bit of information here now. What i'm actually doing is boring out a pair of large stainless nuts and re-threading them to 9/16 26TPI (CEI), to fit an existing shaft which already has this threadform at each end.I will only get one chance at it and I don't want to cock it up! Alan R, I'm going to stick with the tried and tested 1/2 forward 1/4 back they taught us at college. I think it was to stop us numptys shearing taps ;).I will set it up in the pillar drill as this will give me some semblance of squareness.

Hi ZIPPY---spot-on, matey !! In my obtuse manner what I was actually trying to say was not to be tempted to go 2 or 3 turns forwards ( which you can do with a "softie " such as mild steel or Aluminium. If boring then a good, sharp tungsten tip with some negative top rake and PLENTY of free-flowing suds. Unless you have access to ceramic tips------ drooooooooooooooooool !!!

----------- Better still, if you have access to an Auto-tapper then you can machine-tap with alacrity ( That's an Imperial Alacrity--not one of those new-fangled Metric ones LoL !! )-----------

Alacrity not in short supply here as I have a large potbelly stove, coffee on tap, a very good stereo and plenty of 70's rock albums. I'm happy to potter away all day :)

Ha ha. - No! I ran out of swear words cutting those 2. Getting them to start was the worst. They finally started to cut when the CD player decided to play Black sabbath's Sabotage, - "Am I going insane" to be precice....Don't know if that means anything...
