Thanks all, there is quite a bit of information here now. What i'm actually doing is boring out a pair of large stainless nuts and re-threading them to 9/16 26TPI (CEI), to fit an existing shaft which already has this threadform at each end.I will only get one chance at it and I don't want to cock it up! Alan R, I'm going to stick with the tried and tested 1/2 forward 1/4 back they taught us at college. I think it was to stop us numptys shearing taps
.I will set it up in the pillar drill as this will give me some semblance of squareness.
