Finally removed the top cap of the filter today. Pushed a tapered wooden stick (a very small paint brush handle) into the 4mm centre hole, and tried to pull it down and out. kept getting caught about a 1/3 of the way down, tried emery cloth (wet and dry) to ease the bore slightly, this slightly damaged the thread. in the end I used my Dremel rotary tool with a small abrasive emery cloth fitting on and WD40 as lubricant. the tool was just in the chuck so I could get the max length. back in with the stick and out she came! . Cleaned up the thread with my spark plug thread chaser M14 x 1.25 mm . Cleaned out swarf with cotton buds, and blew clear with my compressor.

I have also got back my Inner primary chain case which I have had the sprag clutch "hump" removed and welded. if anyone wants to see a pic , let me know and I'll open another thread.

I used a gasket and lightly greased it, ben doing it for years without any problems. Just make sure you buy a good quality gasket from our hosts, I have a couple from another source and just crap by comparison!
