Good advice , I should have checked that too but the problem was the spark plug had filings on it. See above 🙂

Yes, I know. As far as I understood, the plug's thread is defective and in such a case it is quite normal to find filings.
Of course, the thread has to be repaired. Sometimes we are too fixated on a problem and a possible mistake that we lose sight of other possible causes. Often the real fault lies elsewhere - sometimes in front of the bike rather than in it.

Logical thinking and a systematic approach lead to the goal.

This bike sounds beat. Probably the fuel or spark is going away. Jumping out the ignition circuit might eliminate the ignition switch contacts. pulling the air cleaner and having someone drip (carefully) some gas in while running could prove fuel delivery shortcomings.... I'm a Coulson too! so the name caught my eye. Here in Seattle they are practically giving away Harley Sportsters...One of those with off road tires/shocks/gearing will do the job.. durable too...
Hi,

The Himalayan has performed great from Vancouver to here in Mex and continues to do so despite this worn plug thread problem.

Coulson in Seattle, interesting - am from Durham UK, was in North Bend October '19 quite close to Seattle.

My brother runs a sportster , it's a good looking bike.

Yep, in this case was complicated by adjusting the valves at the same time as having worn threads on the head. I was hoping it wasn't the plug but logically it had to be.
