Don't put off having that plug thread repaired, it will let you down if you don't.
Timesert or helicoil and any half decent auto garage can fix for you.

Well done, sometimes it helps to go back to last thing before the failure.... what did I do

When I start , the revs race then die after five seconds, or if touch throttle.

Check the throttle position sensor and it's connector. Probably you touched it unintentionally during your maintenance.
I hat the same effect with my bike , ending with the same symptoms.

Will the MIL go off after the engine starts? If not, are there any error codes stored?

Good advice , I should have checked that too but the problem was the spark plug had filings on it. See above

Yeh that's right...in this case I removed the plug and adjusted the valves at the same time, had to be one or the two , probably

This bike sounds beat. Probably the fuel or spark is going away. Jumping out the ignition circuit might eliminate the ignition switch contacts. pulling the air cleaner and having someone drip (carefully) some gas in while running could prove fuel delivery shortcomings.... I'm a Coulson too! so the name caught my eye. Here in Seattle they are practically giving away Harley Sportsters...One of those with off road tires/shocks/gearing will do the job.. durable too...
