From looking at the messy apperance under the rocker gaskets it looks like the crud could have come from anywhere. For a rebuilt motor you only need new gaskets no gasket goo.
I have an opinion on the sump gauze too,and that is it stops very little,i have measured it up in length and it comes up 1/8"
short of sealing at the top when screwed in,I have seen big end white metal chips in the rocker galleries (blocked solid) and couldn't come up with any better explanation.Any theories welcome.

There was a spate of owners fitting additional oil filters to their rocker feed pipes on Bullets a few years ago, blocked rocker feeds can lead to other more serious failures.

The gauze strainers also don't do a very good job when fitted to the Electra-X of protecting the scavenge oil pump body (which is actually the timing cover) from getting scored by the smaller bits of failing big-end pin, sump magnets are advised!

Both the feed and the scavenge drain plugs should have a metal gauze filter, part number 140052 for non-metric crankcases. Item 57 in the parts book drawing.
