I take the point about the little Honda compared to the hulking great lump of a diesel! And it raises the question of over-complication and the expense that goes hand in hand with over-complication.
One, among many, arguments in favour of two-stokes!

Check that the throttle is opening the fuel rack up as far as it should, it sounds like the fuel delivery pump is not reaching max delivery. Also check the 'tappet' adjustment for the fuel pump, if applicable, to make sure the plunger is rising and falling as it should and as far as it should.
The pump arm goes all the way to the right, it cannot go further. the pump end has 0,3mm play to the camshaft, what do you mena by tappet adjustment of the pump?
