Thats 5 months gone and still waiting for a warranty part from RE india.Its the exhaust drive/cam gear assembly for a classic 500 efi 2019.Our hosts have the part in stock but I am told Motogb who the part must come through wont deal with our hosts.Maybe someone can confirm or deny this?My dilema is the dealer has warned me if the work is carried outwith an official dealership the warranty is finished.I reckon the part which cost£169 plus the labour could be £250 to £300 region.

What went wrong with exhaust cam?

Exhast cam complete is only £104 from H.
Its a genuine RE part so can't how its not acceptable.?
Have your RE dealer fit the RE part.

The cam gear is worn .Dealer told me there was a spacer missing (listed as a shim in the parts manual).I was shown a video of the worn part.I have put all the info to RE India but after 2 months have not responded.What kind of complicates matters is I bought the bike used privately .It was originally bought from an english dealership.The current Scottish dealership who is dealing with the bike has no obligation to give me a loan bike.

Not that I’m made of money, I’d chat with the dealer to try and reduce the labour slightly, get the part from our host, get it back on the road and forget about the warranty.

Write it off as a bad experience.

Had you bought the bike new from the dealer, then after lockdown, I’d have to say I’d rode to the importers and kick up a stink. Enough of a stick for someone there to write me a check for the job and petrol.

I am planning to leave it as late as March as I wouldnt be riding the bike anyway.There is a chance they may have the part before that.If not I will negotiate with the dealer a price for getting the part from our hosts and the labour charge.

£250 - £300 labour to change an EFI camshaft? - surely that's no more than 2 hours work ? !

Its less than an hours work to swap the cams out and that would include an oil change and wiping oily fingerprints off the cases.

Yes, there should be a shim washer on each cam gear.
Can't think that without one would damage the cam but it might scuff up the cam retaining plate a bit.
But like you, salty roads now, not much biking happening.

I'd completely forget about the warranty - get the part and fit it. As things are going, your warranty will have expired anyway

If it was my bike I think I'd want to talk to trading standards. The time you're expected to wait is an outrage. I wonder what the people in India would have to say about the 'service' you're been trapped in!

The Owner’s Manual insists that work is done by franchised dealers. But I thought that no longer applied. But I am no expert. I quote an AA Q&A:

You are not obliged (since October 2003) to get the vehicle serviced by a franchise dealer during the warranty period. You must though get it serviced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts. If you do get the vehicle serviced outside the dealer network, you must make sure it's done to the maker's recommended schedule and criteria using approved parts. You must also keep records so you can demonstrate to the manufacturer that servicing was undertaken to their requirements. You should still get warranty work undertaken by the franchised dealer as it is easier for them to deal directly with the manufacturer.

I quote an AA Q&A:

I believe the actual legislation behind that only applies to cars not bikes.

Who is the warranty with? RE, MotoGB, some dealer? If it was me I'd send them a letter laying out why this is unacceptable, I would then give them a time limit to sort the issue out under warranty and if they fail to do that a list of the steps and costs for you to source and fit the parts yourself. I'd end it with telling them should I have to resort to it myself I will expect full compensation for doing so or will seek legal redress. I'd also furnish them with a copy of a letter you plan to send to members of the motoring press highlighting the much touted warranty on Royal Enfields is worth less than 3 sheets of Charmin.

No idea if that'll work or if it even has legs to stand on but it might get a myopic sloth somewhere to do something.
