I'll admit I have even considered the logistics of fitting a fuel pump but decided I will live with the idiosyncracies of the thing for now and put the time and money I would have spent on that towards setting up a mikuni.
If you fit a fuel pump you'll likely cause more problems than you already had. You'd need one that produces no more than about 1.5 to 2 psi then cuts off (such as an old type electric SU diaphragm pump). Most small modern pumps produce far more than this so that would require a regulator...and so on, more complication.

After a weekend of fiddling I still could not get it to stop cutting out at junctions/lights etc. So, after checking and verifying the brake light circuit was fine, the clutch wasn't dragging, the float height high, low, in the middle, rich idle mixture, lean idle mixture, changing the spark plug etc. etc. it still ran perfectly but wouldn't stop cutting out so, maybe this carb just isn't right for *my* bike, it does everything exceptionally except for cutting out at junctions and lights so with huge thanks for all the help, input, ideas etc. I've re-fitted the VM28.

As BeezaBryan said "Reading this thread makes me think that something has been fixed that was not broke and now it is.". How apposite. Twice. ;)

As I've said I'm humbled by the generosity of time and effort from everyone who offered their help and suggestions. I am grateful to one and all.

Michael, Good to hear the bike is sorted.

Was the AMAL carb new? If not, had it been run without an air filter? I can't help wondering if the air slide was worn and/or had a poor fit in the main body casting.

It came with the bike when I got it several years ago but I never got around to fitting it until now when I put the 535 big bore kit on so I stupidly thought 30mm as opposed to the VM's 28 would be a good thing. Hey ho. Back to the VM which does everything perfectly. I was told the carb was new, it certainly looked it and was immaculate inside when I took the bowl off. I don't have a receipt for it so I have no idea who supplied it but it just wasn't right for *my* bike. It's now running perfectly again so I'll be wary of making the same mistake again.

As a bit of a tinkerer, I thought about offering you a few pennies to have ago with it. But looking at the prices of them, it could be an expensive mistake!
It's the complete kit, flange, cables, filter etc. etc. John. £25 plus postage and it's yours to tinker with to your hearts delight! ;)
