So- I was sitting in this bar in the red light district of Pattaya Thailand having a few beers at about a pound a glass ( its real cheap now since the virus) About 60 girls work there and all are naked . About 12 or so were dancing on the stage and it occurred to me the potential of an air leak on the round slide carburetor.

The needle jet hole is one and the cable nipple hole was another massive air leak. I considered the fact that all the leaks such as this were in fact contained in the tower itself. The slide tower has a top to it but the cable hole is the last stand as far as keeping the slide and the carburettor air tight.

On older bikes where the rubber grommet has been discarded it would make the carburetor reluctant to respond to adjustment.

I sealed cable is important. Air leaks lurk at every opportunity.

And niether do I like the rubber carb mount o ring seal. That is a big o ring probably 30mm. Its all very well sinking you thumb nail into a rubber ring but the face plate has to crush 30mm of it.

It took a while to flatten the face flange with a flat plate and some 100 sand paper --more so that I would have thought. I reverted to the good old corn flake packet and a smear of gasket compound. I know now 100% it is not leaking from there ---if it was leaking at all.

The potential effect of an air leak into the mixing chamber from the cable entries in the carb top seems to be in theory only with minimal or no noticeable effect on performance.

If this was a problem then it would be a problem on all carburetors with this type of arrangement – which must be most carburetors in use.

Some ‘overthinking’ here maybe?

I am in total agreement regarding the large o ring,it is ok when new and plyable but soon hardens,and distorts the carb flange,a gasket and sealer anytime for me, also if it may be a source of an air leak on the cable ferrule connections and they want to seal it , so be it,what is important to one person ,but not so to others is what it is all about,as long as it keeps us all happy ,in our own way

How many carbs are replaced and the old one dumped under the bench and then someone comes along and uses it.

I would say pretty well much all the time.
