Yes, you are. We are talking about the o ring that seals the oil pump outlet on the pump itself. When replacing the outer timing cover it is essential that the o ring is not displaced. Over time, once compressed by tightening the outer cover fasteners it tends to crumble and should be renewed each time the outer cover is removed. The one in the generator is a much harder brown seal that doesn’t give much trouble AFAIK.

Cranky, you have the wrong way round.
Oil comes out the pump and into the main filter chamber.
From there it goes through drilling in the side case to feed cylinder head and hydraulic valve lifters and also feeds INTO the end of the crankshaft to lube the bigend. So oil is going into the crank not out.
The brown seal inside where the windings are is a Viton oil seal, it should be changed ever 12000 miles.

The viton seal is a similar set up to Triumph twins but on the RE the oil supply is highly dependent on the integrity of the o ring. Worrying.

Don't panic, maybe.
This is the seal that seals the oil pump outlet to the main oil filter compartment.
If it fails or is incorrectly assembled then there will be NO oil pressure to the crank or the head.

This the Viton seal that fits in the centre where the stator windings are.
It seals onto the end of the crankshaft.
If it should fail there will be no oil feed to the bigend.
All the oil to the crank has to pass through a restricter plate which is under the seal.

Yes, I replaced mine when I rebuilt the bottom end. It is a better seal than the pump outlet supply one. Really the oil feed should be better designed than having to rely on the integrity of two separate seals, but at least the crankshaft supply seal is a proper one, not a crumbly o ring that could be displaced when fitting the outer timing cover...Also roller bearings don’t need much oil pressure; just as well really.

Harald, do you happen to have an image of the inside of the RHS cover - the back of the filter housing?
I have an idea for a mod and it would save me removing the cover to check.
