..and maybe responsible fo the very bad idle..
I cleaned the mechanism, but there is axial play on the shaft, i can work freely but when you push the axle a little inwards everything is stuck and the cam positions at any point.

1 is this repairable?
2 how are the experiences with the electronic ignition kits from our host? (reliability, installation etc)

Some of the shafts run on iron bushings, some on bearings.

If it's a bushing type, you can take the shaft out and drift the bushing on the timing chest side back out a little, then reassemble. It'll be bound up tight against the bushing when you do so. Now apply a light (like really light) tap on the end with a small hammer and it should seat the bush enough so it spins freely but without significant play. The bushes can be swapped out for bronze ones (part 143630) if you so wish, although my iron ones seem fine even after 90k miles.

You can also fit shims if a partially seated bush is the kind of thing that makes you loose sleep at night. part 92040

A bit of a pain in the backside to do because you have to remove the timing chest cover and pull the distributor pinnion to get the shaft out.

If it's the bearing type.. Sorry, dunno, probably similar though.
