Hi again ,I have the plain brg basket ,but was advised as my previous email to fit the circlip, looked through the primary inspection screwed bung hole earlier clutch seems to move ok when lever pulled,no juddering ,so as I previously said ,I started to alter the clearances, the push rod is now on 1/2 turn clearance ,and the handlebar lever clearance now also reduced, with bike running on center stand and in first with clutch lever pulled in ,at least now I can stop the rear wheel with my foot without it stalling,so progress has been made ,

If the centre bearing is plain then the circlip is not required. I don't know whether its presence is helping or hindering the operation of your clutch. BTW You can also try adding a ball bearing between the clutch pad and pushrod. That is usually to aid the smooth operation of the clutch at the lever, but it may also give you a little more adjustment.

Half a turn is quite a lot on the rod adjuster try a quarter at most and then adjust cable for about an 1/8"freeplay at the lever

Hope this helps Dai

The springs have to be identical for the plates to lift squarely avoiding drag. You can try a new set but I have found you still have to use shims equalise the length of the springs to give you a starting point . It can take hours to get it right . Graham

Like others have said it must first be adjusted correctly.

However any clutch will drag if it is unable to separate the plates from each other,--this is how the clutch works.

The steel plates have to be flat. You can test these on a glass plate which for no other reason the flattest thing there is around the house. If they are not they have to be tapped or persuaded by hand to be so.

Hi again ,so I took everything apart again, the clutch drum backplate runs true, the steel plates are new and totally flat,I removed the circlip as previous email advice ,measured all the friction plates ,all ok, completely cleaned them ,gave all the friction plates a very light rub across A4 sized emery paper,to clean up cork faces, brushed on motorcycle grade synthetic oil, onto the cork faces, then assembled everything, adjusted clutch pushrod as per my Royal Enfield workshop manual ie 1 turn clearance as published by L and D motors,(who I knew very well) ,started bike ,no change still dragged and finding neutral almost impossible,so as previous email advice , readjusted pushrod clearance to 1/4 turn clearance, clutch now works fine as long as lever is pulled right back to handlebars,so that is how it will now be set .

Thanks for all the advice

Regards. Colin
