Thread lock this is another one that I think we should talk about

Thread lock's come in different types I don't know all of them but will talk about the one's I use for different jobs, in 50 odd years of turning spanners and bodging old machinery I may have got set in my ways and not be up to date

The one's I use are
Blue universal
Red high strength heat resistant
Green course thread, high strength, heat resistant, and creeping

Firstly I know people that use only blue and have no problems

Secondly I'm not going to tell you what to use where that's for you to decide I will just give a couple of examples of what I would use and where.

Blue I use for things like fork pinch bolts, fork damper bolts, luggage mounts, mudguards etc

Red I tend to use for engine internals, exhaust studs, etc

Green gets used for thing's like that indicator that keeps vibrating lose tighten it up add a drop of green to the outside of the nut it will creep in and solve the problem, also for engine mounts use it the same way just a drop on the thread where it comes through the nut.

I will also use red or green on thread inserts and carb studs red for finer threads green for courser threads, after fitting the insert grease up the fitting it's going to be used with screw it in to set the insert remove the fitting and leave overnight.

(sorry folks I really struggled with that!)

Any questions just ask I will try to help

For engine casing screws I don't like to use thread lock, due to the fact that the threads are often worn to begin with I just use a smear of hylomar

Oil drain plugs again hylomar

Quill bolt on bullets again hylomar

For anything that doesn't go tight (carb flange nuts etc) hylomar

I think I have covered most things any questions please ask Dai

Additive's

Again just my views I won't say to use or not just what and when I use

Fuel first
In general I don't use any additive just super unleaded in ASBO 30 I do carry a small bottle of octane booster for the time's I can't get super unleaded .
Stabilizer if a vehicle is going to be off road for a short time I will use a stabilizer For any long term storage 3-4 months I will drain the tank and run motor until system is empty or drain carb
I have used Sea Foam in the car at half dose and it seems to have helped (slight miss at tick over probably a dirty injector) also have found using it seems to help stabilize fuel

Oil additive's I tend not to use these I did use Slick 50 years ago in a Hilman Avenger (told you it was long ago) and the tick over went up and stayed up, a mate of mine used it in a XS 650 and once rode it a mile or two before remembering that he hadn't refilled the oil, but looking at recent reviews it now seems to be another snake oil product I did notice that it now seems to be made by a different company

STP, Wynn's, and Lucas addatives I tend to mix 50/50 with engine oil to use as a assembly lube, probably no need, but if the motor's not going to be used straight away I feel like it sticks better (probably doesn't) than just engine oil

Engine flush. Some people swear by it others have never used it
If I buy a bike with unknown history and it shows signs of abuse/neglect I will drain the oil change the filter and fill it with ATF then run it up for a few minutes (a fella I know uses 50-50 engine oil and parraffin I always cringe at this) then change out the filter and oil again you'll be surprised at how much sludge the ATF will shift
With modern oil and filter technology along with a good service schedule you should not have any sludge build up

Hopefully some of you are finding these ramblings useful I feel most are more likely to be of use to newbys not the veterans

Take care all Dai

Don't throw anything away....
Some time ago, I was describing my garden water butt SYSTEM to a young lady I worked with. Then I realised it wasn't really her thing and said Oh, I must be a daft old bugger. She did that thing with her eyes and said Well I think you are an eco-warrior.
Wow! Very proud.
So, here's some re-used things, sometimes genuinely couldn't have bought anything better new.
I'd be properly interested to hear what others have made use of.
Thanks, Chris

Wood was due to go on bonfire. Now a fence. Also made a gate after the photo was taken.
R.E. Party shoes. She was baffled and now uses them... ok, once a year, for RE Xmas party.
Mirrors and CDs reflect sun into living room before the sun comes round. Lights are off; very eco-friendly
Table top from bin outside café. Had found the frame/legs at the bottom of the garden.

Just changed the wheel bearings on my 61 bullet, i was looking round the shed for a suitable drift and checked the worn fork parts i'd changed the week before and lo and behold the bronze fork bushes fit perfectly! yep, definitely don't throw anything away
